RICS routes to membership
print“RICS membership is a professional and academic bridge with reality, it provides an excellent opportunity to compare methodology and best practice within the context of an international globalised marketplace. It can also be defined as a unique opportunity to confront oneself with the most important protagonists of the real estate market."
Maurizio D'Amato FRICS, Politecnico di Bari, Italy
RICS has different 'routes to membership' depending upon the interested professional's academic and professional qualifications and relevant experience (please refer to 'APC terminology explained' for any terms that are unclear):
GRADUATE 1 route - For those who have an RICS accredited degree and no professional experience
Requirements regarding APC (Assessment of Professional Competence) structured training and Final Assessment submissions:
- 24 months structured training to meet the competency requirements
- 96 hours of professional development over the last two years
- record of progress signed off by the Counsellor
- critical analysis (3 000 words)
In principle, Graduate 1 candidates enrol for the APC upon graduation, with following exception:
- students on accredited part time postgraduate degree courses may enrol onto the APC as soon as they register for the course, and can go straight to Final Assessment once they have graduated. In this manner, they can complete the 24 months structured training while studying on their accredited part time postgraduate degree course
GRADUATE 2 route - For those who have an RICS accredited degree and 5 years relevant experience (pre-degree experience counts)
Requirements regarding APC (Assessment of Professional Competence) structured training and Final Assessment submissions:
- 12 months structured training to meet the competency requirements
- 48 hours of professional development over the last 12 months
- record of progress signed off by the Counsellor
- critical analysis (3 000 words)
GRADUATE 3 route - For those who have 10 years relevant experience (pre-degree experience counts) and an RICS accredited degree
Requirements regarding APC (Assessment of Professional Competence) structured training and Final Assessment submissions:
- CV (using the CV Template)
- record of competence showing that you have met the competency requirements
- 48 hours of professional development over the last 12 months
- critical analysis (3 000 words)
ADAPTATION route - For those who have 10 years relevant experience (pre-degree experience counts) and a non-accredited degree or a professional qualification of an organisation approved by RICS (click here to check) combined with 450 study hours from the final year of an RICS accredited degree
Requirements regarding APC (Assessment of Professional Competence) structured training and Final Assessment submissions:
- CV (using the CV Template)
- record of competence showing that you have met the competency requirements
- 48 hours of professional development over the last 12 months
- critical analysis (3 000 words)
SENIOR PROFESSIONAL route - For professionals who are now in a senior industry position and have:
- a first degree or equivalent professional qualification combined with 10 years relevant experience OR
- a first degree and higher degree, one of which should be surveying related, combined with 5 years relevant experience, OR
- a PhD in a surveying related subject combined with 5 years relevant experience, OR
- a relevant Master degree combined with 5 years relevant experience
Please note that the professional experience needs to include at least 2 post-graduation years
Requirements regarding APC (Assessment of Professional Competence) structured training and Final Assessment submissions:
- CV detailing the relevant technical and mandatory skills required by the chosen pathway (using the CV Template). These should cover leadership and management skills
- 60 hours of professional development over the last 3 years
- 3 X 500 word case studies demonstrating competency (2 of them can be published articles or presentations)
ACADEMIC route - For those who have been teaching or researching on an RICS accredited degree and have:
- an RICS accredited degree, OR
- a property related higher degree
- minimum 3 years teaching and research activities that are relevant to the profession
Exception:
- holders of a formal postgraduate teaching qualification are exempt from one year of the period of teaching and research
Requirements regarding APC (Assessment of Professional Competence) structured training and Final Assessment submissions:
- four peer group referred research papers that have been published within the four years the individual has been teaching or researching on an RICS accredited degree
- 3 000 word statement documenting the relevance of the research to the profession and how this has been applied
- interview based on submissions, research, knowledge and understanding of the mandatory requirements of the area of specialism as well as professional practice
If you wish to apply for the academic route please send your complete academic CV to ricseuropeeducation@rics.org
