"The number of foreign investors and multinational players is rapidly increasing in Italy. Both are demanding uniform international standards of professionalism embodied by RICS members. Membership of RICS is therefore important for those who aspire to work internationally. It has enabled me to develop both professionally and personally by working in the UK, Hungary and currentlyItaly."
Lelio Manna FRICS, Director CB Richard Ellis SpA and Head of Corporate Real Estate and Agency services, Italy

Qualified members of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) earn between 8%-35% more than non-chartered property-professionals, according to the RICS and Macdonald & Company European Salary & Benefits Survey, published in October 2008.

The survey reveals a significant salary gap between RICS members and their non-qualified counterparts.  Chartered surveyors just beginning their careers, aged 26 to 30 years, can expect to earn on average 59,200 € per year as compared with non-qualified property professionals who earn on average 44,900 € per annum.

70% of respondents received a bonus in the last twelve months, with the average amount being 21,010 €, representing 27% of the average salary.

“Having a range of interesting work” was quoted as one of the most important aspects of job satisfaction, with over 80% of respondents expressing contentment with their present employer.  Nearly two-thirds of respondents anticipated a growth in their profession’s economic activity over the coming year.

Liliane Van Cauwenbergh, Director, RICS Europe, said:
“For the first time we have available one of the most informative and complete reports on trends in property remuneration across Europe.  With insights into the wider issues that are important to all property professionals and attitudes towards employment, the survey clearly confirms that being a member of RICS offers clear benefits to those willing to develop their knowledge and expertise.”

In total, 911 property professionals from across Europe participated in the survey. For full details of the report, go to the News section of this website.

RICS member information services:

  • full access to member-only content on www.rics.org
  • RICS Library and information services: support and advice, technical information, reports, e-books, leading research papers and books - all online on www.rics.org/library
  • reduced prices on selected RICS publications from RICS Books on www.ricsbooks.org
  • regular newsletters, e-briefs and the monthly RICS Business magazine

In summary, property professionals choose to become chartered surveyors for two main reasons:

  • the high level of standards offered by RICS in terms of the quality of the qualification, professional development, independent analysis, guidance, advice and the fact that members are regulated throughout their careers to meet the standards
  • the status conferred by the membership - the RICS designation opens doors, the main international players value the qualification, and membership of RICS offers ongoing opportunities for practitioners to network with top-level peers worldwide
