During the EU Sustainable Energy Week in March, RICS organised a half day seminar to discuss the environmental and energy challenges and the role of the built environment.

RICS Global Head of Sustainability Policy Ursula Hartenberger summed up the key findings:

  • Density is a key element in creating vibrant neighbourhoods and cities, but density does not necessarily mean high rise. A good example is the city of Paris;
  • (Local) governments play a key role in the much needed behavioural change;
  • Urban transport and the mobility choices we make are a significant part of our carbon footprint, therefore making it an important aspect of urban planning.
